Choose the Right Type

The Type controls how the item is treated on a load.

  • Accessorial: Extra charges or reimbursements, such as lumper fees, detention, layover, delivery fees, tolls, or fuel surcharge. Can carry customer and carrier/driver amounts. Can be hidden from the customer invoice.
  • Commodity: Freight or cargo being moved, such as produce, machinery, pallets, or lumber. Shows details like description, quantity, weight, class, or handling unit. Can appear on invoices, rate confirmations, dispatch reports, and bills of lading when configured.
  • Payment Advance: Money advanced against a load. It is subtracted from the load total. Tracked separately from accessorials.
  • Direct Cost: A cost that counts against the load's profit but is not billed to the customer, such as a repair or internal expense. Appears in the load's direct cost area.
  • Fee: A charge Load Manager calculates from a set amount or percentage, either a flat amount or a percentage of the carrier total. Can apply to the customer rate, carrier/driver rate, or direct cost. If Automatically add to all new loads is selected, it is added to every new load.

Setup Fields

Fields depend on the type and your enabled settings.

  • Code: The short name users select in the table.
  • Description: The longer description.
  • Type: Accessorial, Commodity, Payment Advance, Direct Cost, or Fee.
  • Active: Whether users can select the type.
  • Customer Rate: Default amount charged to the customer.
  • Carrier Rate / Driver Rate: Default amount paid to the carrier or driver.
  • Amount: Default amount for Direct Cost or Fee.
  • Amt Type: For Fee: flat amount or percentage of the carrier total.
  • For: For Fee: customer rate, carrier/driver rate, or direct cost.
  • Automatically add to all new loads: For Fee: adds it to new loads.
  • Hide on Customer Invoice: Keeps the item from printing as a visible customer invoice line.
  • Taxable: Marks the item taxable when Canadian sales tax is enabled.
  • Handling Unit: Default unit such as pallet, crate, box, bag, case, drum, roll, pipe, or other.
  • EDI Charge Code: Connects the item to an EDI charge code.
  • Show Totals On Summary Export: Includes this item's totals in the summary export.
  • Sales, Cost of Sales, and Bank Account: Accounting fields. Payment Advance types use Bank Account instead of Sales and Cost of Sales.

Use a Type on a Load

On the load screen, add rows in the Commodities and Accessorials table. Each row can include:

  • Qty, Type, Description, Weight, Class
  • Customer Rate: Amount charged to the customer.
  • Carrier Rate / Driver Rate: Amount paid to the carrier or driver.
  • Carrier %: A carrier percentage, when your workflow uses it.
  • Customer Charges and Carrier Charges: Calculated totals for the row.

Payment Advance rows reduce totals. Direct Cost rows affect profit. Commodity and Accessorial rows can increase the customer and carrier/driver totals.

Assign a Type to a Specific Carrier or Driver

Use this when a carrier's or driver's default pricing differs from your general setup.

  • Carrier: Open the Carrier Information page and add the type.

  • Driver: Open the Driver Information page and add the type.
