Review Carrier Safety Data with Carrier Lookout

Before You Use This Article

  • Access needed: Carrier Lookout enabled on your Load Manager account. It is included with Premium for eligible freight broker or dispatch service accounts; otherwise use it only when the feature is enabled for your account.

Carrier Lookout helps Carrier-tab accounts review carrier safety, insurance, and compliance information from inside Load Manager. When enabled, it can help populate carrier details from a DOT or MC number, show carrier risk indicators, and display supporting safety and insurance data on the carrier profile.

Before you start: Carrier Lookout must be enabled for your account. It is included with Premium for eligible freight broker or dispatch service accounts; otherwise use it only when the feature is enabled for your account. Applies to Freight Broker and Dispatch Service accounts.

Carrier Lookout is a decision-support tool. Your team should still follow your company compliance process before booking a carrier.

What Carrier Lookout Can Show

Depending on your enabled integration, the carrier record, and the data returned by the carrier safety source, Load Manager may show information such as:

  • Carrier name, DOT number, MC number, address, phone, fax, email, and contact details.
  • Insurance information and expiration details.
  • Authority and compliance information.
  • FMCSA Safety Measurement System information, including BASIC-related data where available.
  • Crash and safety indicators where available.
  • A carrier health or risk indicator inside Load Manager.

BASIC Scores in Plain Language

FMCSA organizes carrier safety information into seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories, commonly called BASICs. These include Unsafe Driving, Crash Indicator, Hours-of-Service Compliance, Vehicle Maintenance, Controlled Substances/Alcohol, Hazardous Materials Compliance, and Driver Fitness.

Carrier Lookout brings related safety information into Load Manager so your team can review it while working with carrier records. Use the data as part of your carrier qualification process, not as the only factor in deciding whether to book a carrier.

Add a New Carrier with Carrier Lookout

  1. Go to the Carrier tab.
  2. Select Add Carrier.
  3. Enter the carrier's DOT number or MC number.
  4. Select Continue.
  5. Review the carrier information returned by Carrier Lookout or the enabled carrier safety data source.
  6. Select Save when you are ready to save the carrier to Load Manager.

Carrier Health Colors

Load Manager may use carrier health colors to help your team spot carrier review items quickly.

  • Red: The carrier may have missing, expired, or concerning insurance or safety information.
  • Yellow: The carrier may need review soon, such as insurance nearing expiration or safety data that needs attention.
  • Green: The carrier information available to Carrier Lookout does not show the same level of concern.

The color is a quick indicator, not a final compliance decision. Open the carrier details and review the supporting data before deciding how to proceed.

View the Carrier Lookout Report

  1. Go to the Carrier tab.
  2. Open the carrier profile.
  3. Open the carrier safety, Carrier Lookout, or SaferWatch section available in your account.
  4. Review the available insurance, authority, BASIC, and crash information.

Carrier Alerts on Loads

When you assign a carrier to a load, Load Manager may show an alert if carrier safety data indicates missing, expired, or concerning insurance or safety information. Read the alert before continuing and follow your company's carrier approval process.

When Data Is Not Available

If Load Manager cannot return Carrier Lookout information:

  • Confirm the DOT number or MC number is correct.
  • Confirm Carrier Lookout, SaferWatch, or your carrier safety data integration is enabled for your company.
  • Try searching by DOT number if the MC number does not return data.
  • Review the carrier directly in your normal compliance source if the carrier is new or if the data looks incomplete.
  • Contact Load Manager support if the carrier safety lookup appears unavailable for every carrier.

Best Practices

  • Review Carrier Lookout before booking a new carrier.
  • Do not rely only on the color indicator. Open the report and review the supporting data.
  • Check insurance expiration dates before dispatching a load.
  • Document your team's carrier approval decision when a carrier has a warning.
  • Recheck carrier data periodically, especially for carriers you have not used recently.
