Assign a Carrier or Driver to a Load
Assign a Carrier or Driver to a Load
[Audience: Dispatchers, Operations Users, and Admin Users - All TMS Types]
Use the assignment section on the Load Screen to choose who will move the freight. The wording and workflow depend on your TMS type: Freight Brokers and Dispatch Services assign carriers, while Carrier or Trucking Company accounts assign drivers.
Choose the Right Assignment Workflow
| TMS Type |
What You Select |
Primary Dispatch Document |
| Freight Broker |
Carrier. The carrier's driver can be stored as a carrier contact or entered on the load. |
Rate Confirmation |
| Dispatch Service |

Dispatch Report |
| Carrier or Trucking Company |

Some accounts may show options such as Both, Carrier, or Driver. Use the option that matches who is actually moving the load and how your company is set up.
Assign a Carrier
Use this workflow for Freight Broker and Dispatch Service TMS accounts.
- Open the load from All Loads, My Loads, or the Dispatch Board.
- Go to the carrier section of the load.
- Start typing in the carrier selection field.
- Select the correct carrier from the list.
- Enter or confirm driver contact details for the load, when needed.
- Enter equipment, truck, trailer, rate, and reference details used by your workflow.
- Save the load.

Assign a Driver
Use this workflow for Carrier or Trucking Company TMS accounts.
- Open the load from All Loads, My Loads, or the Dispatch Board.
- Go to the driver section of the load.
- Start typing in the driver selection field.
- Select the correct driver from the list.
- Enter or confirm driver cell, equipment, truck number, trailer number, rate, and reference details.
- Save the load.
Assign Additional Drivers
Some Carrier or Trucking Company workflows support additional driver tabs, such as Driver2 and Driver3. Use those sections when more than one driver needs to be connected to the load.
- Open the load.
- Go to the driver section for the correct stop.
- Open the additional driver tab.
- Select the driver.
- Enter any required pay, equipment, or contact details.
- Save the load.
Before You Send the Dispatch Document
After assigning the carrier or driver, review the details that will be used for the carrier-facing or driver-facing document.
- Carrier or driver name.
- Driver cell phone number for mobile dispatch or GPS tracking.
- Truck, trailer, and equipment details.
- Pickup and delivery instructions.
- Carrier or driver rate and accessorials.
- Dispatch notes or critical driver notes.
Troubleshooting
- The carrier or driver does not appear: Confirm the profile is active and entered in the correct Carrier or Driver tab for your TMS type.
- The wrong section is showing: Confirm the account's TMS type and whether the load is set to Carrier, Driver, or Both when that option is available.
- The dispatch document has the wrong title: Freight Broker accounts use Rate Confirmations. Dispatch Service and Carrier/Trucking accounts use Dispatch Reports.
- Mobile dispatch is not reaching the driver: Confirm the driver cell phone number on the load.
- You cannot edit the assignment: Check whether the load is locked by status, accounting workflow, or another user editing the load.
